A jewellery valuation (or valuation certificate) is a document that offers a detailed description and an assessed value of a jewellery item. The value is determined based on current market conditions. The valuation considers various market contexts (such as retail replacement, deceased estate, auction reserve, and others), which can differ significantly, and these factors are considered when preparing the valuation.
Insurance: A valuation offers a comprehensive description and an accurate value assessment, ensuring your jewellery is properly insured and supporting claims in the event of loss, theft, or damage.
Estate Planning: Valuations are crucial for accurately determining the value of jewellery within an estate, ensuring a fair division among heirs and assisting in the calculation of inheritance taxes.
Selling: A professional appraisal establishes the fair market value of your jewellery, enhancing your negotiation power and attracting serious buyers when you decide to sell.
Personal Knowledge: Understanding the value of your jewellery provides peace of mind and empowers you to make well-informed decisions regarding your collection.
Divorce Settlement: A valuation can be used to assess the value of jewellery during divorce proceedings, ensuring a fair and equitable distribution of assets.
Damage Assessment: In cases of damage, a valuation helps determine the worth of your jewellery for repair or insurance purposes.
Proof of Ownership: A valuation serves as official documentation to verify ownership of your jewellery.
Adding a Valuation to your order
While a proof of purchase can be used, some insurance companies may not recognize a Tax Invoice and may require a Valuation to confirm that an independent Valuer has assessed the item. A qualified professional must issue the Valuation, complete with a seal and the Valuer's registration details, as further assurance of the authenticity of your goods.
At Thelis, we are qualified Jewellers, Diamond Graders, Gemmologists, and Valuers. As registered members of the National Council of Jewellery Valuers (NCJV), purchasing a Valuation from us provides added peace of mind, ensuring that the item you receive is exactly what you are paying for.
Thelis offers a Valuation as an add-on option during checkout for an additional $100, which is recommended for items over $1,000.
It’s important to note that Valuations differ from Diamond Certificates. A Diamond Certificate does not include a value for your diamond; it is a lab report that details the diamond's characteristics but does not assess its monetary worth.
