There are two main differences between them:
1. How they're made:
- Natural diamonds are formed in the earth
- Lab grown are manufactured in a Laboratory using the same conditions as the natural diamond.
2. Price
A 2ct Lab grown will cost approximately $3,000 vs a natural costing $30,000

How do you tell them apart?

Lab grown and Natural diamonds are optically the same, making them impossible to tell them apart with your naked eye. However, an expert can the difference!

The quickest way for our qualified Diamond Graders and Valuers, to confirm the nature of the diamond is by locating the laser inscription on the diamond’s girdle and matching it to the certificate.

While both Lab grown and Natural diamonds share similar inclusions like feathers, pinpoints and cleavages; the most common distinguishing inclusion characterising a Lab grown diamond is "Remnants of the growth process"; these can look like crystals, metallic spheres, or rods.

Lasting, if inclusions cannot be seen, there is a specified machine our experts are able to place the diamond into, that analyses the grown patterns under a UV light.

An example of an imitation gem is a cubic zirconia, an inexpensive gemstone which comes in a range of colours to mimic that of a precious gemstone. The reason they're so inexpensive is due to the large volumes of which they're manufactured. When it comes to Lab grown gemstones, they're chemically identical to that of a natural gemstone and have the same crystal structure.

The most common way of handmaking an engagement ring begins with the raw materials such piece of sheet, that is saw pierced and formed into the desired shape, then individually soldering on each claw. To make the band, it may be rolled from square stock gauge (Which is a square wire usually 6mm thick) down to the preferred thickness, bent into shape and filed to achieve a profile, such as a half round, flat or knife edge.

A hand finished piece means; the components have been cast. This means the design has gone through a process from CAD design, 3D printed and then cast in your desired metal. A Jeweller then takes the components and hand files, polishes and assembles them.

Thelis uses a combination of both techniques, when crafting your jewellery.

Gold vermeil is a form of gold plating, and this is applied in layers to create a slightly thicker plating. Approx 3 times thicker than standard gold plate. And is usually performed over base metals like copper/brass or even silver. It is not permanent and will wear off over time.

Solid gold like 10k or 18k is consistent throughout, even though it may dull or oxidise due to chemicals, this is only surface and can be polished back to its beauty very easily.

Solid gold means it is gold through and through. It will not change colour or flake. Can be worn in water and will outlast any form of gold-plated jewellery.

It's super important to always check the description to see what carat of solid gold it is, it may be 9ct, 10ct, 18ct.

18ct is made up of 75% fine gold; or some may call it pure gold, and 25% mixed alloy such as fine silver, and palladium or even copper.

Compared to 10k which is made up of 41.7% fine gold, and 58.3% mixed alloy.

While 18k is more traditional and a brighter yellow in colour, the additional alloys in 10k made it slightly stronger and less expensive.
